The Room
Holy shit, that's some quality acting!
Despite being one of the worst movies ever made (apparently), The Room, directed and starring Tommy Wiseau has become a huge underground hit. I can totally understand why, it looks hilarious!
I have got to watch this!

Its been too long...
Sorry for not posting anything for ages, my Xbox has been very demanding, especially with the incredibly simple yet highly addictive interactive game show, 1 vs 100.
Here's a quick rundown on all the films I've seen this year using my Superman rating system;

Here's a quick rundown on all the films I've seen this year using my Superman rating system;
The Spirit (12A) - Nice looking comic book film with an egg obsessed Samuel Jackson playing the villain.
Che: Part One (15) - Excellent. This should have won many awards.
Role Models (15) - This features an awesome KISS battle and a funny swearing kid, more films should have these.
Slumdog Millionaire (15) - Extremely over hyped but still very enjoyable and a welcome change to the normal hit movie.
My Bloody Valentine 3-D (18) - Not a paticulary great film but the 3D was fun.
The Wrestler (15) - Incredible. This is the career reboot Mickey Rourke needed and deserved.
Frost/Nixon (15) - Great cast. Its been a while since Ron Howard made a decent film.
Underworld 3: Rise Of The Lycans (18) - Boring crap. A totally pointless prequel to the Underworld series and without the sexy Kate Bekinsale swanning around in her skin tight costume. Now where's the fun in that?
Bolt (3D) (PG) - Fun kids movie. The 3D was pretty pointless. The hamster was really funny.
The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button (12A) - Incredible effects and a really interesting story. Just a shame it got released at the same time as Slumdog Millionaire, it may have done better at the Oscars.
Punisher War Zone (18) - Wow! This totally surpasses all previous Punisher films, bringing kick ass violence back to the screen in style! An unexpected gem.
Gran Torino (15) - A truly brilliant film, possibly Clint Eastwoods last on screen role but what a film to finish on. Bravo!
Push (TBC) - Think 'Heroes' the movie. I quite enjoyed this, although with a TV series you have more time to develop the characters. Unfortunately films don't have that luxury and often have to rush through the story.
The International (15) - I slept through most of this but did wake up to see the the shoot out at the Guggenheim art gallery in New York. That was fantastic!
Watchmen (18) ) - This has got to be the most acurate translation of a graphic novel I've seen so far. Incredible visuals. The story was quite baffling but so was the original.
Duplicity (12A) - I really like this and really enjoyed the chemistry between Julia Roberts and Clive Owen.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop (PG) - This is Die Hard for kids basically, and that's not a compliment!
Knowing (15) - OK, I was given a warning of the stupid ending before watching the film so wasn't too disappointed by it. In fact, I really enjoyed the ride, however stupid it may have been.
The Damned United (TBC) - Michael Sheen was great. I didn't know much about Brian Clough before watching this but came away with new found respect for him.
Monsters Vs. Aliens (3D) (PG) - A fun kids movie. I watched this in 3D but it really wasn't worth it, standard 2D would have been fine.
Fast And Furious (12A) - The original crew return for an enjoyable collection of stunts and races.
Let The Right One In (15) - Maybe it was the novelty of watching a Swedish horror film but I really found this new slant on the vampire story to be original and unique.
Crank 2: High Voltage (18) - This is so retarded. Just imagine the worst video game, running on acid and you get the picture. Unfortunately they will probably make a 3rd film to complete the retarded trilogy, and I'll most likely end up watching it. Now who's the real retard here? Don't answer that!
I Love You Man (15) - There were some funny moments and seeing the Canadian band RUSH on screen was pretty awesome, but not enough to carry this otherwise mediocre comedy.
In The Loop (15) - The absolute BEST comedy film of the year. If you liked this watch the original TV show, The Thick Of It. Absolutely fantastic political comedy. Malcolm Tucker is one of the best characters ever created!
Observe And Report (15) - This is the better of the years Mall Cop films. Seth Rogen and team are well cast and hilarious. I especially liked the drug induced montage.
State Of Play (15) - Based on a BBC series, this was a fairly enjoyable story about a government cover-up, and the reporters trying to uncover it.
X Men Origins: Wolverine (12A) - A testosterone fueled monster mash, with muscle bound dudes growling at each other! It could have been better.
Coraline (PG) - A lovely stop-frame animated feature, presented in 3D. This time the 3D worked well (for a change)!
Star trek (12A) - Oh wow! To reuse the phrase again, this 'reboot' is incredible. Everything about it is great and the twist in the story enables the new crew to do pretty much anything and not effect any of the original movie plots.
Angels and Demons (12A) - Boring, stupid & pointless - an average Dan Brown inspired movie! It looks like Ron Howard's back to making crap again.
Night At The Museum 2 (PG) - Usually family films like these have levels suited for children and adults, this time the emphasis was just on the kids and I lost interest.
Drag Me To Hell (18) - I wasn't expecting much from this. Don't get me wrong, I really like Sam Raimi's old horror films and his Spider-Man movies were a blast but I had a feeling he had lost touch with his horror roots. I was totally wrong, this was brilliant. Please do another horror film Sam!
Terminator: Salvation (12A) - I think the director McG meant well with this film but for some reason it just didn't work. The CGI Arnie was really cool though.
The Hangover (15) - I really don't understand what everyone else saw in this film. I don't remember laughing once, maybe the odd smirk here and there but I clearly remember no laughing! The jokes/situations all seemed to be recycled from other films and TV shows, plus any possible genuine funny moments were shown during every trailer, which was seen at the start of most film at the cinema!
Blood: The Last Vampire (TBC) - A live action version of a Manga. It was OK but the story really let it down, and the ending... what was that all about?
Red Cliff (15) - John Woo tried his hand at a historical Chinese epic. The obligatory John Woo white dove had its very own slow-motion scene, bless!
transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen (12) - I really loved the first movie but Michael Bay cranked up the craziness to level 11 and ruined it. Shame!
Year One (TBC) - I know this wasn't widely liked but I was in my element spotting stars from obscure American TV shows. Both Jack Black and Michael Cera were great.
Public Enemies (15) - I can't really comment on this one. I slept through most of it but heard it was OK.
Bruno (18) - I really liked this but probably wouldn't want to watch it ever again. How he could get away with so much is beyond me but you have to admire Sasha Baron Cohen for trying!
Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince (12A) - I haven't read the books, I've only ever seen the films. I always feel disappointed after watching Harry Potter. They seem to do a fantastic job making the film (cast, scenery, SFX etc.) but the story never seems to be any good. 90% of the story seems irrelevant and the 10% that does only really comes in at the end. That's just my opinion!
Moon (15) - David Bowies son, Duncan Jones made his directorial debut with this film and did an incredibly good job. It was made on a relatively small budget but you wouldn't know it.
The Blues Brothers (15) - I've never been so happy watching a film! I had a stupid grin on my face through the entire movie, I absolutely love this.
G Force (3D) (PG) - My main reason for watching this was to hear the excellent Tracy Morgan voice a CGI guinea pig! It taught kids how to abuse their pets, something I am totally against and something which Disney, of all the companies, should have monitored closely. I expect many guinea pigs will die because of this film.
Land Of The Lost (TBC) - After reading the reports that this was the final nail in Will Ferrell's career coffin my expectations were very low, which is probably why I liked this. It had a lovely bright and clourful comic book style to it.
The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3 (15) - From what I can remember it was OK but had a really stupid shaky-cam which ruined some of the scenes.
G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra (12A) - It's a stupid, big budget American blockbuster which isn't ashamed of being just a bit of fun.
The Final Destination (3D) - This had some nice death scenes, twists and some fun 3D effects.
The Hurt Locker (15) - Fantastic! One of my most favourite films of the year. It doesn't have anyone particularly famous (other than Kate from Lost but she's hardly in it) which helped the film be about the story rather than one, super famous actor hogging the screen time.
500 Days of Summer (12A) - A cute, and at times dark, chick flick.
District 9 (15) - Awesome, awesome, awesome! Another favourite film of the year. Based in South Africa and with an unknown cast, this had a different feel to the standard Hollywood sci-fi and will hopefully mark the start of a new sci-fi franchise.
Gamer (18) - Another dumb movie based on video games. When will movie producers get over this?
The Thing (18) - An absolute classic. John Carpenters finest horror film in my book. This was screened in high definition and looked amazingly good.
Surrogates (TBC) - I expected this to be completely crap but was actually an enjoyable film.
The Invention Of Lying (12A) - I like Ricky Gervais, I really didn't like this. Did he screen test this, if yes, who to?
Pandorum (15) - This could have been brilliant if it wasn't for the crap direction. It was way too dark, with too many close up incomprehensible shots. Shame!
Zombieland (15) - Brilliant!!! This has the best film cameo EVER.
Up (in 3D) (U) - Pixar can do nothing wrong in my opinion. This was another gem.
Couples Retreat - Holy crap, this was bloody awful! No laughs, not even a smirk. I wanted to leave halfway through it.
The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus (12A) - This is Heath Ledger's last film, and although he died before all the scenes could be shot, Gilliam did a remarkably good job filling in the blanks with the replacements.
Fantastic Mr Fox (PG) - I slept through most of it but heard it was good. Sorry Wes!
9 (12A) - 9 is a very strange film. All man kind has been destroyed and the only things remaining are small robotic toys and bigger robotic creatures. It did have some nice animation though.
Michael Jackson's This is It (TBC) - I'm not a huge Jackson fan but wanted to see this out of curiosity. It was very interesting to see his creative side, especially how he was so fussy over every single note played. It's worth watching the film just to see the new versions of his classic videos (Thriller, Smooth Criminal etc.).
Animal House (R/I) - Classic comedy. Take a note of this 'Hang Over' lovers, this is how it's done! Like with the Blues Brother film, watched previously in the year, I smiled and laughed loudly throughout. One of my all time favourite comedies.
Harry Brown (18) - Gran Turino was better. This is a much darker version, which paints a really horrible picture of Britain.
A Serious Man (15) - I can't say I fully understood everything that was going on, as I'm not Jewish, but all the bits I did understand were really great.
The Informant! (15) - A bizarre but funny film. Matt Damon was brilliant. I'm not sure if the character he played was an idiot or a genius!
Law Abiding Citizen (18) - OK, I was fully expecting another crap, mediocre Gerard Butler action film (see Gamer) but was pleasantly surprised. It had a really good cast and enough twists to keep me entertained (and awake) throughout.
The Box (12A) - Directed by the same chap that made Donny Darko. Its very original. The sci-fi element was a bit too close to 'Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' which may put people off.
Where The Wild Things Are (PG) - Lovely looking film. Its good to see a new Spike Jonze film, seems like ages since his last one. The Jim Henson workshop did an amazing job on the giant creatures, they look believable. The story was strange, I can't say I understood the ending.
Avatar (12A) - The highly anticipated film of the year is finally on the big screens. Does it live up to the hype? "Yes" would be my answer! It's basically 'Dances With Wolves' with blue aliens, dragons and Mecha's but don't let that put you off. The special effects are the best I've ever seen, the characters look real! The only downside I had was with the 3D technology. It didn't do anything spectacular or that noticeable, I even forgot it was in 3D until something floated in front on the lens near the end. |
