Quick film catchup - the best and worst

Here's some quick reviews for a few films I've recently seen. I can't remember them all (I've seen tonnes!) but here's some of the best and worst.

The Best

STAR TREK - I absolutely love this movie! I've now seen it three times and would happily watch it again, my regressed Trekkie personality has been awoken.

The casting is fantastic, everyone seems to suit their roles perfectly and writing is dead on featuring a great mix between drama, action & comedy throughout.

The story involves time travelling and parallel universes, nothing new in the realms of Star Trek. It is however a brilliant way to separate the original Star Trek series and films from the new version but have the freedom to use the same characters and not have to worry about keeping continuity. They (as in J.J Abrams and his crew of writers) can basically rewrite Star Trek history however they like. Its so clever!

The film itself can be compared to the excellent Wrath of Khan movie, with the new villain Nero (played by Eric Bana) being similar to Khan.

Lost creator J.J.Abrams does a brilliant job directing although does go a tad overboard with the lensflare effect! I have every bit of faith in J.J and look forward to the next movie.

DRAG ME TO HELL - When I originally heard that Sam Raimi was returning to his horror roots I was a bit dubious as to what to expect. The Spider-Man films were pretty good but the third film left a nasty taste in my mouth! Leave all negative preconceptions at the door however, Drag Me To Hell is fantastic!

Its very much a Raimi film from start to finish, fans of the Evil Dead movies will love the similarities and nerds like myself will enjoy seeing Raimi's signature '1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88' car and his special camera techniques.

I wouldn't say it was a particularly scary film but there are loads of really gross moments, they made me laugh as it was so ridiculously disgusting!

I couldn't help feel sorry for Justin Long throughout this film, lets just say I never saw his girlfriend clean her teeth and there were a few kissing scenes directly after some gross moments!

IN THE LOOP - This film is a big screen adaptation/addition to the brilliant BBC political comedy 'The Thick of It'.

Written and directed by one of my favourite comedy writers, Armando Iannucci (writer of Alan Partridge amongst other great shows) this film follows the political life of an MP and his staff as they try to get themselves out of a political fiasco.

It all starts when a MP on a radio interview mentions something out of context and then somehow manages to get caught up in a huge war debate with the American government.

Its all completely stupid but thoroughly believable and really really funny.

The Worst

ANGELS & DEMONS - OK, I've never read any of the Dan Brown books and this with the Davinci Code film will not persuade me to start. Are the books really this stupid? Answers on the back of a postcard and sent to the usual address.

I really wish Ron Howard would get back to directing better movies, he's a talented guy. Stop wasting your time on this shit please!

To sum up the story of Angels & Demons, the entire stupid plot is just an incredibly elaborate plan to get Ewan MacGregor elected as the new pope. Why they had to go to these extremes seems totally retarded when all it took was for MacGregor to take a 'bomb' up in a helicopter, set it off then parachute back into the Vatican Square as a hero.

Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb!

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE - They should have just released the unfinished version that was leaked several months ago as the proper main feature, at least it had the extra comedy element.

Wolverine has always been the best character in the X-Men films (in my opinion) and I was really exited to see this movie but the end result was a huge let down. Don't get me wrong, Hugh Jackman was made to play this role and does it really well.

The story revolves around the US government trying to recruit mutants to experiment on, in the hope of creating the ultimate weapon. They eventually get their hands on Wolverine and inject him full of super strong Adamantium. We already knew that from the previous X-Men films but it goes into a bit of extra detail. He escapes and is then tracked through the movie by his evil brother, Sabertooth (Liev Schreiber).

There's a load of fight scenes between the two brothers but ultimately each scene is the same, a testosterone fuelled sausage fest that gets boring really quick!

There's the generic big battle at the end with the 'Ultimate Weapon' and finishes with Wolverine losing his memory. Its all pretty standard stuff, nothing memorable.

Apparently Ryan Reynolds character 'Deadpool' is going to have his own spin off movie. Hopefully it'll be set before this one otherwise it'll just be about a decapitated head shooting lazers out of its eyes for 90 minutes. Hang on, yep... that sounds retarded enough for Hollywood to give the green light!

TERMINATOR SALVATION - I'm saving a spot in this section for you!

Films of 2009

Its been a while since I've written anything about the many many films I've seen so I thought I'd write a quick update.

Best of 2009 (so far)

So far my two most favourite films of 2009 are 'The Wrestler' with Mickey Rourke and 'Gran Turino' with Clint Eastwood. Its really hard to decide which out of the two I enjoyed the most.

I won't insult you by describing what The Wrestler was about since the title gives it away, you just need to know Mickey Rourke gave an incredible performance, good enough to kick start his movie career again. He's going to be in Iron Man 2 and even Rambo 5!

Gran Turino was a totally different film to the one I expected from watching the trailer. Although the car (a Gran Turino) is featured in the film, its real purpose was just to bring Walt, a grumpy old Korean War veteran and his neighbour Thao, a Hmong teenager together. Neither enjoy the others company to start with, but over a stretch of time and through some truly awful events they gain respect for each other and later form a strong friendship. This friendship is honoured to the bitter end. This is possibly Clint's last on screen appearance, he's apparently going to spend more time behind the camera directing. The guy is almost 79 so I can't blame him for taking the back seat.

Future greats of 2009

I am really looking forward to the new Star Trek film. Directed by the great J.J.Abrams of Lost/M:I3/Cloverfield fame I'm expecting big things from this. Recently Leonard Nimoy gave unsuspecting fans an advance preview of the new movie in Texas, the fans were at the theatre to watch a special presentation of The Wrath of Khan. Apparently the film was so good fans were reported to be drawn to tears out of shear joy! That type of thing doesn't happen that often so my hopes are high that this won't disappoint.

Terminator Salvation looks incredibly fun. Christian Bale has had his fair share of flack after the highly publicized argument on set and I understand things haven't gone entirely to plan with the shooting but from the awesome trailers I've seen this looks set to bust box office records. McG, one of the guys behind the brilliant Supernatural show is directing the film.

X-Men Origins - Wolverine, who hasn't already seen this film? I guess I'm aloud to talk about it since I'm not employed by the press or with any movie company. Just to make things clear, I didn't download it, I just saw the first half streamed on MegaVideo before it was pulled. A half finished version of the film was leaked onto the internet a few weeks ago. It had missing CGI. It was a really unique experience seeing an FX heavy film stripped down like this. To be honest, I don't think this leak will harm the film at all. Someone at the studio mentioned that those who had downloaded it were either people that would illegally download any film or fans of the comic book series who would watch it at the cinema anyway. I for one would really like to see it on the big screen to compare with the unfinished version.

Transformers 2 looks to be CRAW-tastic! For those not familiar with the word 'CRAW', watch the South Park Imagination Land trilogy. I'm guessing this film will be darker than the first, with the Decepticons winning the battle between the Autobots. The third film would be the Autobots regaining power, similar to the Jedi in 'Return of the Jedi', minus the Muppets (although a Muppets version of Transformers would be interesting!).

2010

Is it too early to start talking about 2010? Anyway, the one and only film you need to look out for in 2010 will be the much talked about Sly Stallone movie, 'The Expendables'. Take a look at the amazing cast! Stallone just needs to get Chuck Norris on board and the film would simply explode with awesomeness!!! If the fans get it their way like with 'Snakes on a Plane', it'll happen. Rumours suggest that The Expendables may actually be a code name for Rambo 5, hmm....?

Simon Pegg, the new Scotty!

Simon Pegg has signed up to play Scotty (originally played by the late James Doohan) in the new 'Star Trek' movie directed by J.J Abrams, due for release in 2008.

Pegg & Abrams have already worked together in the 2006 movie, Mission Impossible III.

I wonder what Pegg's dodgy Scottish accent will sound like.
