The Ghost Busters (1975)

What's all this about, I hear you ask. Well, in 1975 there was a Saturday morning kids TV show called 'The Ghost Busters'. It was about a team of bumbling detectives who would investigate ghostly occurrences. This would later spawn a cartoon series of the same name.

Its not really related to the movies other than the title. Columbia Pictures bought the rights to the title for the 1984 Aykroyd/Ramis film and following productions.

This kinda explains why the Ghostbusters cartoon series based on the movie's was called 'The Real Ghostbusters', it had a rival show to distinguish itself from.

I've ordered the 1975 live action show on DVD so I'll post an update after I've seen a few episodes. It does look god-awful from the opening credits seen on YouTube but I'm curious to see if this had any influence over the more commonly known Ghostbusters series I know and love.

Isn't late night random Amazon shopping the greatest for finding bizarre crap stuff like this!

On a separate note, I wonder if the gorilla in the 1975 show inspired the Mighty Boosh character Bollo?

Jack Black in new Ghostbusters film?

Jack Black is desperate to star in the new Ghostbusters sequel and lobbied original star Harold Ramis when the pair worked together on new movie Year One.

After directing Black in the neanderthal comedy, Ramis is preparing to reprise his role as Dr. Egon Spengler in the third Ghostbusters film.

The veteran is also on the shortlist to direct the sequel, and Black admits he used his time with Ramis to campaign for the chance to hunt ghouls with him.

Black tells Moviefone, "Could I see myself in it? Yeah, I can bust some ghosts! I ain't (sic) afraid of no ghosts! Buster."

Ghostbusters III will star the original line-up of Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson, as well as a new batch of younger spook chasers.

Ghostbuster 3 - cast rumours

Recent reports suggested bosses at Columbia - the studio behind the first two movies in 1984 and 1989 - were lining up Seth Rogen, Steve Carell and Paul Rudd to join original stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson in a new movie.

At last, Ernie Hudson finally gets his name mentioned! He never seemed to get any acknowledgment towards the Ghostbusters films from the press/media.

I like the idea of Rogen, Carrell and Rudd joining the cast. They all seem to have the right mindset to become decent Ghostbuster characters in my opinion.

Ghostbusters 3 'in development'

Two writers from the US version of The Office have been recruited to write a third instalment of Ghostbusters, according to trade newspaper Variety.

Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky's hiring is seen as a sure sign the long-mooted comedy will finally be made.

Ghostbusters and its 1989 sequel saw Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis as bumbling scientists who rid New York of paranormal threats.

It is hoped the new film will reunite the original cast.

Columbia Pictures has declined to comment on whether a third Ghostbusters was in development, Variety reported.

But director John Landis, who worked with Aykroyd on The Blues Brothers and Trading Places, has said the film would definitely be made.

"I'm not involved but I know it's happening," he told the BBC News website at the Venice Film Festival.

Eisenberg and Stupnitsky recently collaborated with Ramis on the script for his new film Year One.

Last year the original Ghostbusters cast signed up to lend their faces and voices to a computer game based on the hit film series.

The game's storyline was being written by stars Aykroyd (Ray Stanz) and Harold Ramis (Egon Spengler), who also scripted the first two films.

But the game's future was thrown into doubt when publisher Activision announced it would not be releasing the finished product.

Developers Vivendi insisted the game had not been canceled, and that it would be published by another company.

Return of the Ghostbusters (2007)

"Hold yer horses!"

'Return of the Ghostbusters' isn't an official sequel to the Ivan Reitman originals. This is actually a fan made film which is the sequel to the 2004 film Freddy VS. Ghostbusters (also fan made).

Check out the official site here; www.returnoftheghostbusters.com

They've done a pretty good job from the looks of things although don't expect the same quality of the originals.

Ghostbusters 3???

As IGN report, this poster was seen at a recent convention in San Francisco. What does it mean? Is it to promote the forthcoming Ghostbusters video game or the release of the two films on UMD & Blu-Ray? Is it a teaser for a possible 3rd film?

Watch this space!

Here's some footage from the new video game, available at the end of the year if things go to plan.

Be Kind Rewind (2008)

Be Kind Rewind is an original comedy about an old run down video (yes, VHS) rental shop on the brink of closure.

Whilst the manager (Danny Glover) takes a short break he leaves the shop in the capable hands of Jerry (Mos Def). Jerry is pestered constantly by his conspiracy theorist friend Mike (Jack Black) who owns the local scrap yard. Through some idiotic scheme (you'll have to watch it to see, its very funny!) Mike gets magnetized and accidentally erases the entire VHS collection in the shop.

In a desperate attempt to keep the shop running and to fool the customers Mike & Jerry re-shoot the films with the aid of a really old video camera, toys, tin foil, scrap metal and tonnes of enthusiasm! The re-made films (or 'sweded' films as the story refers to) become surprisingly popular with the customers in the neighbourhood, often running at a fraction of the time as the original but so much funnier. Business soon picks up after the public find out about the homemade movies.

The sweded version of Ghost Busters is simply fantastic, trailers for all the sweded films can be found here or the official (sweded) site - www.bekindmovie.com/youtube.

Theres more to the story than just sweded films but I don't want to spoil things any further.

The film itself has a nice low budget indie look to it, directed by Michel Gondry who's previous films include The Science of Sleep and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
